Mote Does It All: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Tasks for Language Teaching was a compelling session at MoteCon 2024 led by Maureen Lamb, a seasoned language educator. This presentation highlighted the versatility of Mote, a powerful voice recording tool, in transforming language learning through innovative teaching tasks. Educators can leverage Mote to enhance language acquisition by making interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational tasks more dynamic and effective.
• Mote offers multiple ways to create voice recordings, enhancing flexibility for language educators.
• Speech-to-text transcription supports language comprehension and feedback.
• Mote's integration with Google Slides allows for seamless practice and asynchronous presentations.
• Embedding audio in Google Sites can support digital portfolios in educational settings.
Mote provides three primary methods for creating voice recordings. Firstly, educators can use the Mote plugin to record with their own voice, providing a personal touch to feedback and instructions. Secondly, Mote allows users to generate a voice recording with a selected voice and language, which is particularly beneficial for teaching languages with diverse accents. Lastly, users can upload audio files, a feature my students find useful when they prefer recording on their phones.
One of Mote's standout features is its speech-to-text transcription capability. This feature is invaluable for students learning a target language as it enables them to both hear and read the content simultaneously. For educators, providing feedback in the target language becomes more effective when students can follow along with a transcript, reinforcing their learning through dual channels.
Mote's seamless integration with Google Slides makes it an excellent tool for language teachers who wish to enhance student presentations. Students can record their voice for each slide, making practice presentations more engaging and enabling asynchronous presentations. This practice not only enhances speaking skills but also builds student confidence in language proficiency.
Although not the primary focus of the session, embedding audio in Google Sites is a feature that supports the growing trend of digital portfolios in educational settings. This capability allows students to create rich, multimedia presentations of their work, showcasing their language skills in a comprehensive format.
