Highlight Notes

Attach a written note to any highlight, so the reason a passage mattered is saved alongside the passage itself.

What this feature does:

Highlight Notes let a student type a note to go with a highlight. Every time they mark a passage with the Highlighter, they have the option to add a note explaining why it matters, or anything that will help them remember it.

Notes are always attached to a highlight, never left on their own. They appear alongside the highlights in My Annotations, and they carry across when a student exports a page's highlights to a Google Doc.

Why it matters:

  • Captures the thinking behind the highlight, which is the part students usually lose between reading and writing
  • Turns marking up a page into note-taking, without a separate document to manage
  • Gives students who find extended writing hard a place to record a short thought at the moment they have it
  • Makes a marked-up page usable weeks later, when the color alone no longer means anything

MTSS:

  • Tier 1: A route into annotation and active reading for the whole class
  • Tier 2: Supports students who need to externalize comprehension checks as they read

UDL Principles:

  • Multiple means of action and expression: students record their thinking in short written notes rather than extended prose
  • Multiple means of engagement: supports self-regulation by prompting students to say why something matters
